Wood Shake Roofing Is A Great Choice

There are two types of wood roofing—shingles and shakes. Neither boasts the practicality of a modern roofing material like asphalt shingles, but it’s difficult to deny traditional wood’s aesthetic appeal. In fact, many other roofing products try to simulate look of wood shingles and shakes. Made from cedar, spruce, red wood, cypressor, or treated pine, wood roofing is especially appropriate for older homes and those based upon historical styles.

Wood shake roofs are not only beautiful but durable as well, lasting 30+ years assuming quality material and proper installation. They are environmentally friendly because they’re made from a natural, renewable resource and are biodegradable.

Wood roofs have been used to protect homes for over a hundred years which is a testament to its reliability. It has a rustic, natural look and ages beautifully. Most wood roofing is made from cedar because it is light, yet durable. Cedar will weather to a gray color in several months if not pressure washed. This graying is natural and often desired aesthetically. Cedar is a long lasting product as well. If properly maintained, an Ace Roofing & Construction wood roof can give you approximately 30 years from shakes and 20 years from wood shingles.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Do I know When My Roof Needs To Be Replaced
The first indications are if the roof is more than 20 years old.  Most roofs that have been installed more than 20 years ago should be inspected by a trained professional.  Look for delimitation of shingles and loss of granules which would expose the shingle matting to UV rays.
Can I Get Wood Shakes If I Have Asphalt Shingles Now

The answer is yes!  Wood shakes in most applications will easily replace your asphalt shingles.  A few adjustments will be required but nothing that should prohibit the change to wood shake roofing.

How Long Does It Take To Replace My Roof

Roof replacement varies depending on the size and complexity of a roof.  Typically a quality roofing contractor will complete a roof in as little as 3 day but may take 10 days for the same size roof with more complexity.

What About My Landscaping
Roofing is a very dirty and dangerous job.  Most quality roofing contractors will have a landscaping protection plan.  This usually involves using plywood to cover shrubs and plants around the perimeter of a home.  The yard will then be covered with a tarp while the tear off process is underway.
Will I Have Nails All Over My Yard
Typical a roof has approximately 40,000 nails in it.  The majority of the nails will stay in the shingles as the shingles are removed.  The balance of the shingles will be collected with a rolling nail magnet.  The crew should do a sweep of the property 3-5 times during the process.  Most home-owners find about a small coffee cup full of nails over the corse of the next year.

Ace was recommended to us by a friend as well. We had wind/storm damage to our shake roof which was extensive enough for our insurer to recommend replacement. Ace (Mike Awalt) arranged a meeting here with our adjuster to get things rolling, and once that happened the project was coordinated and completed by Mike and his team very quickly. This even with spring snow and shipment of shake materials from out-of-state. Once started, the roof was completed in 6 days. Cleanup occurred after every day's work! We did not do anything. The final cost and insurance claim checks were negotiated and sent without any involvement on our part--Mike did it all, including building code research and City approvals. Thanks very much--these things happen very seldom, but this experience was perfect!read more

Just bought a house and I went in knowing the roof needed replacement. After a recommendation from a neighbor I called. Right from the start they were pleasant to work with. They went over roofing options, showed up on time, got the job done quickly but still correctly. All in all a good experience working with this company and a definite recommendation from me to use them.read more

Yes, the roof is on but was the wrong color. The guy who set up the job "No longer works for the company. We haven't seen him in weeks and he isn't answering his phone. It happens". The new guy I spoke with says the color on the contract was changed... mine wasn't. After much confusion, calls, emails, and letters, they made good on all our requests and addressed all our concerns. Talk to Mike. He's a good man.read more
